The set code is the answer
Every Japanese Pokémon TCG set has a code like sv8a (Terastal Festival ex) or sv2a (Pokémon Card 151). English sets use different codes (SV05, SCR, etc.). If a listing has the JP code, it's the Japanese version — period.
Quick rule:
- sv* — Scarlet & Violet era Japanese set
- s* / sm* / xy* — older Japanese eras
- SV*, PAR, PAL — English releases (not Japanese)
Packaging tells
Japanese sealed booster BOXes:
- 30 packs per BOX (English boxes are 36)
- 5 cards per pack (English is 10)
- BOX includes a small promo card insert (Japanese only)
- Japanese text on the box flap and pack art
Truly Japan-only releases
Some products never get an English equivalent:
- Pokémon Center exclusive sets (Special BOX, regional promos like ポケモンセンターフクオカ)
- High-Class Pack series (e.g. Shiny Treasure ex, VSTAR Universe) — sometimes get English equivalents months later, but Japanese is always first
- Tournament/event promos distributed at JP-only events
- Movie tie-in promos handed out at Japanese cinemas
Release timing rule of thumb
Japan releases first. English releases follow 4–9 months later, usually as a reshuffled "main set" combining 2–3 Japanese sub-sets. If you want to play with new cards before your local tournament scene catches up, buying JP is the only way.
Verify before you buy
Two-minute checklist:
- Find the set code (sv8a, sv2a, etc.) in the product title or photo
- Cross-check on pokemon-card.com (the official Japanese page)
- If listed there, it's an authentic JP release
